Supplementary list of issues to be taken up in connection
with the consideration of the second periodic report of
Afghanistan (CCPR/C/57/Add.5)

1. Please provide precise data on the number of death sentences handed down, and the number of executions that have taken place, since the end of 1999. Have any public executions taken place since then?

2. What is the justification for the partial destruction in March 2001 of the giant statutes at Bamiyan, in the light of article 18 of the Covenant? Please comment on the destruction, during the spring of 2001, of several thousand artefacts of non-Muslim origin in the archives and collections of the Kabul Museum of History.

3. How are the directives adopted in May 2001, requiring persons of non-Muslim faith to identify themselves clearly in public, considered compatible with articles 18, 19, 26 and 27 of the Covenant? Have those directives been implemented and enforced?

4. How is the prohibition, with rare exceptions, on women and girls to attending secondary and higher (university) education considered compatible with articles 3, 23, 24 and 26 of the Covenant?

5. Are the strict dress codes imposed on all Afghan women compatible with articles 3, 17, 19 and 26 of the Covenant? How are the restrictions on freedom of movement imposed on Afghan women and girls considered to be compatible with article 12 of the Covenant?

6. What is the justification for the recent decree prohibiting television broadcasts and cinematographic and theatre representations, in the light of the requirements of article 19 of the Covenant?
